convection

The process by which heat is transported in a fluid through the mass movement of the fluid itself. Convection is effective when there is a substantial decrease in temperature with height in a fluid, for example within certain layers in stars. A bubble of gas that is hotter than its surroundings expands and rises. When it has cooled by passing on its extra heat to its surroundings, the bubble sinks again.
